A small match … a huge fire … a mighty quenching

Match Fire Quench

And the gift is not like that which came through the one who sinned. For the judgment which came from one offense resulted in condemnation, but the free gift which came from many offenses resulted in justification (Romans 5:16)

The second difficult verse in our Bible study text this week (Romans 5:12-21) is Romans 5:16 – specifically this phrase: “the free gift which came from many offenses resulted in justification”.

It’s always best to consider a verse in it’s larger context and for this I suggest reading all of Romans chapter 5 and considering the study notes for this week’s lesson.

What this text cannot mean: Somehow many offenses saves anybody!

The image above illustrates my understanding of the text. A very small match and specifically the small act of lighting that match results in a great forest fire. Adam’s seemingly small act of disobedience started a string of events that has results in many many sins, sinners and the awful consequences of that sin. The one free gift is the atoning work of our Savior Who satisfies the wrath of God for all who believe unto salvation. The greatness of the act of propitiation quenches the many offenses resulting from Adam’s act of disobedience.
