Leadership is service

Christ Washing the Feet of the Apostles by Meister des Hausbuches, 1475

But Jesus called them to Himself and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those who are great exercise authority over them. Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you, let him be your servant. And whoever desires to be first among you, let him be your slave—just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.” (Matthew 20:25-28

This Wednesday I would like to dialog with you more about the proposed 4BYA leadership council.

Several weeks ago I sent out a poll. The poll results report that the idea of a leadership council is favored.

I wanted to emphasize with the above quote from Matthew’s gospel, that true leadership is service. To be a leader does not mean control, domination, or status. The true Biblical leader is one who ministers. We only have to consider the examples of our own pastoral staff or deacons or deaconesses to see this.

My motivation to have a 4BYA leadership council is not to be less involved with the Fourth Baptist Young Adults. Kathee agrees with me on this. We are delighted to fellowship and minister among you. This ministry is the most delightful ministry of my lifetime.

Our (including Kathee now!) motivation is to leverage the gifts and talents and desires of young adults to involve you in our ministry.

Some have asked, “what would the 4BYA leadership council do?” This is a good question and needs to be fleshed out. I see these areas of involvement:

  • Greet and welcome young adults to Fourth Baptist Church.
  • Inform young adults about the fellowship and ministry of 4BYA.
  • Help follow-up on young adults who visit Fourth Baptist.
  • Assist in the planning and organization of 4BYA activities

These five have volunteered to be on the 4BYA leadership council:

Gals Guys
Beth Leaf Jeremy Cobb
Elizabeth Kain Ben Fugate
Lindsay Tuttle ————

During our fellowship and Bible study hour, this Wednesday, I would like to ascertain the direction this should go? Does the 4BYA group favor this idea? And are you agreeable with the proposed leadership team?
